Visiting Scholars and Students

Visiting Scholars

We welcome visitors from other universities who wish to spend a period of up to 12 months at Lancaster engaged in language-related study or research. Visiting academics from other universities or tertiary institutions can apply to be Visiting Scholars. Please note that faculty approval of applications for Visiting Scholars takes place twice yearly, in May and November, it is therefore advisable to apply well in advance.

As a visiting scholar, you are also usually charged a fee, unless you come to Lancaster as part of an established academic link scheme or you are appointed by the University as a Visiting Fellow. The fee is commensurate with your use of the Department’s and the University’s facilities; in addition, you are assigned a member of staff who will act as your primary point of contact during your stay at Lancaster.

Visiting Postgraduate Students

If you have a first degree from your own university can apply to be a Visiting Postgraduate Student. This allows you to attend modules, have your work supervised and assessed by a member of academic staff, make use of student accommodation and welfare facilities, etc. However, you will not be registered for a degree at Lancaster University and are charged a lower fee than are MA, MPhil or PhD students.

How to Apply

If you wish to apply as a visitor to the department of Linguistics please contact Mrs Elaine Heron. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES send multiple copies of identical or almost identical emails to several or all members of staff. This wastes a great deal of staff time and may cause confusion about who is replying to your query. Elaine will reply to your email with details of how to apply as a Visitor.
