Geoffrey Leech Scholarship
The Geoffrey Leech Scholarship is open to UK, EU and Overseas applicants. The value of the award will be equivalent to the UK/EU tuition fees, but non-UK/EU students may also apply.
This scholarship for MA study was set up by the Department of Linguistics and English Language at Lancaster to mark the retirement of Professor Geoffrey Leech. Geoff Leech is one of our most eminent and long-serving colleagues, and internationally renowned for his pioneering work in modern English grammar, stylistics, and corpus linguistics. As co-author of the Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language and the Longman Grammar of Spoken and Written English, he is one of the foremost authorities on the English language. The scholarships are for study on any of the MA programmes listed above.
Award criteria: The scholarships will be awarded on a competitive basis. Candidates for a scholarship will be ranked based on the following criteria:
- Academic ability (as evidenced by academic record and references)
- Suitability for the programme applied for
- Commitment to scholarship in the relevant field(s)
- Potential for contribution to scholarship and society more generally
- Financial need.
Application procedure: After you have applied for one of our Lancaster-based MA programmes and have accepted an offer of a place, you will need to write a formal request to be considered for the scholarship. This should be no more than 500 words and make a case for receiving the award with reference to the criteria listed above (and any others which you feel are relevant). Please include enough detail about your financial situation to allow the Department to assess your need. All applications will be treated confidentially.
Scholarship applications must be forwarded, no later than Monday 28 May 2012, to:-
