Overview

The Literacy Research Centre is a leading centre in literacy studies, and was established with core funding from the Department for Education and Skills. It runs a wide variety of research projects funded by a range of research councils, foundations, and agencies.

The Centre is internationally known for developing theories of literacy as a social practice, an approach to the study of communication which investigates literacy in terms of people's shared activities and purposes, rather than as a decontextualised skill or attribute of an individual (as 'literate' or 'illiterate').
